Post Empty unit next to Tesco

We've been notified that Camberwell Community Council will be discussing a planning application for the empty unit next to Tesco on Southampton Way.

The unit, which has not been used, has existing permission for use as a shop or an office. The planning application is for it to be used instead as a Jehovah's Witnesses' Kingdom Hall.

Some people living in our area have expressed concern about this - partly due to the loss of a potential amenity (i.e. the potential for another shop to open) in our neighbourhood, and partly due to the additional pressure this may place on car parking on nearby streets.

We missed the formal consultation, which took place around Christmas time, but are nevertheless interested in finding out more about what people locally think.

Any views out there?

I would be really disappointed if the Council approves this request. The local area has numerous churches, community halls and schools which could be utilised and supported with extra funding leaving a prime piece of real estate open for amenities which would significantly benefit the whole local community. The opening of Tesco started a long awaited slow regeneration of Southampton Way and something the Evolution and South Quarter residents longed for and lobbied for a long time. To make this area more attractive, support regeneration and improve the bad reputation of the area amenities taken for granted in other areas need to be present here to attract new residents. That's means cafes, bars and shops. That aside poor public transport links and already over burdened streets with no public parking will be put under further pressure as worshippers will need to rely on cars to attend. The council should be offering incentives to support local business to utilise the facility.

Not sure if this can still be fed into the process but I strongly object to the application.

This is not the first application made for this location by this group. The previous application was rejected by the planning officer because of the lack of parking and public transport. As that remains true, I can't really understand why the planning officer has recommended planning permission is granted this time. It seems that the only difference between the two applications is that this time the church has paid some "experts" to find, conveniently, that traffic won't be a problem.

Hopefully the community council will reject it.
